Tom Alsop
Tom Alsop holds a Masters degree in Spanish Literature from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN and a BA from Marian University in Indianapolis. In 2000 Tom retired from Ben Davis High School after a long and rewarding career teaching middle school and high school Spanish. Since 2000 Tom has served as an adjunct professor of Spanish at Butler University.
He has previously served as President of the Indiana AATSP, the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association and the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica of AATSP. Tom also has served on the Board of Directors for Central States. Tom served for 19 years on the AATSP Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Executive Council.
Tom, while teaching at Ben Davis HS, received the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture, Ben Davis HS Teacher of the Year, Wayne Township Teacher of the Year and Indiana Finalist for Teacher of the Year.
In Tom’s 31 year writing career he has created more than 350 culture and grammar activity books, readers, grammar workbooks, videos/poster sets for Teacher's Discovery and Carlex. He presently writes, does workshops and directs the WorldStrides/University of Colorado Spanish Teacher Immersion Programs in Guadalajara and Madrid. He is a frequent exhibitor and presenter at state, regional and national world language conferences.
Tom’s latest endeavor has been to help form Bilingual Nation USA. The company is dedicated to promoting the learning of Spanish using Rap/Hip hop music. The singer is Guero Loco, one of Tom’s former students at Ben Davis HS.
